Koi brings beauty to your house where your loved ones will have a great relaxing time for sure. However, for a better experience of these koi, a little effort is required

To maintain great quality koi, let us discuss the key points.

In a koi  pond, water quality is the most necessary element in order for a koi  to thrive. A Koi starts suffering quickly if you are unable to provide good water quality which leads to the forming of dull colors on Koi. So kindly certify the water quality and do examine the water quality post climatic changes.

The most efficient method to have good quality water is the most asked question of many people, that shall be answered now.

Here are the factors for maintaining good water quality

  • Water Source
  • Frequent testing of Water Quality
  • Good Bacteria
  • Filtration
  • Oxygen Levels
  • Over Stocking
  • Temperature
  • Feeding

By regularly testing your water quality, we get assured that water conditions are in a proper condition.

Optimal water parameters

PH                        –       Acceptable range is 7.0 to 8.3
Ammonia            –       0.00
Nitrite                  –       0.00
Nitrate                 –       0.00
KH                        –       The ideal range is 80 to 200 PPM

Need for having good bacteria

Good bacteria in a koi pond is highly essential in preventing stagnation and build up in the water. Having good bacteria has many advantages like fighting illness from being able to establish, improving immune system and ensuring that the internal system of the fish runs smoothly. Acquiring good bacteria are crucial for clean water.

If you want to make your fish larger, then overfeeding them is the only option, which may lead to unwanted water quality.

The key to have good water quality is to have a proper koi pond filter in the size of your pond. The best way to ensure that the water quality is in a proper parameter is to have a good Mechanical and Biological filter working together.

Mechanical Filtration

  • A filter that is cleaned often is called mechanical filtration. This filter needs to be
  • cleansed on a regular basis because at this stage, it catches more and more fish poop
  • and other minute particles which are waste particles. A mechanical filter can be easily
  • available in the market which are both expensive and cheap. So do your research well
  • before purchasing. A mechanical filter can be customized on your own like and
  • dislikes.

Biological Filtration

The process of cleaning the filter which will be done very less times or sometimes never is called Biological filtration. Biological filter is mandatory in a pond as it will be like a house to the good bacteria that will eat the organic waste in the pond.  The waste that was not cleaned in the mechanical filter is cleaned in this filter. Just as mechanical filter, you can customize according to your likes and dislikes. A biological filter also can be easily available in the market which can be both cheap and expensive, so kindly research it before. If your pond has a biological filter be rest assured that the koi fishes and the pond have good quality water and have a healthier life.

Oxygen Levels

When the oxygen level becomes too low, Koi’s do not survive. Koi’s and other aquatic animals need oxygen to survive like human beings. Ponds contain bacteria, plants and koi, this means that the whole of the pond needs oxygen to survive. If a koi is in need of oxygen or is on the surface, it depicts that there is no dissolved oxygen. The most efficacious way to generate oxygen is to transfer oxygen The rise in the water from the bottom of the pond is usually done by the bubbles and blowers allowing the water levels to mix in the air. Having a good aerator accelerates the oxygen flow and hence makes the water healthy.

Filtering of the koi needs to be done where there is a lot of water. But, if the filter cannot process, the water quality of the pond shall be reduced. If your pond is releasing GHI you can stunt their growth and prevent them from growing into a potential full size.

Your pond is going to heat up, if it gets 12 hours of straight direct sunlight. Blending of sunlight and shade always works in a pond. Shade helps in reducing algae in the pond.
